Evan Czaplicki

Creator and developer of Elm

Evan is the creator of the Elm programming language. He is currently focused on bringing the benefits of type functional programming to databases, with the longer-term goal of developing Elm in a sustainable and healthy way. He has been developing compilers and servers in Haskell for nearly 15 years, and has significant expertise in using custom, low-level techniques to get the best possible performance out of Haskell programs.

We all love typed functional languages, but there are still not that many jobs. Why?

Language decisions are often made by non-technical founders, risk-averse managers, that one contractor who wrote the whole MVP in Ruby, etc. Sometimes we get lucky and they use Elm or Haskell or OCaml, but if we want to see more jobs, we need to start making our own luck!

What are the needs of sceptical decision-makers? What needs to happen to meet those needs? (It is not just about writing more code!) How can existing companies cooperate more effectively? Can we get better tooling if we organize a little differently? (Yes!) And how can we avoid sceptical decision-makers altogether?

By emphasizing our collective organizational challenges, I hope that this can be an inspiring starting point for renewed cooperation between existing companies.
